HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE (A CASE STUDY UNITED BANK OF AFRICAN)
Abstract
Human Resource Management (HRM) has evolved into a strategic function that directly influences the sustainability and competitiveness of organizations. In Nigeria’s banking sector, particularly in high-risk regions such as Maiduguri, Borno State, HRM plays a pivotal role in addressing challenges posed by insecurity, skill shortages, and employee turnover. This study investigates the influence of HRM practices on organizational performance at the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Maiduguri branch. Specifically, it examines HRM activities such as recruitment and selection, training and development, performance appraisal, and compensation, with a focus on their impact on employee performance and overall organizational outcomes. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, drawing data from a sample of 109 staff members proportionately selected across departments. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and interviews, and analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics, including correlation and regression analysis. The findings reveal that effective HRM practices significantly enhance employee satisfaction, productivity, and organizational efficiency, thereby supporting the Resource-Based View (RBV) theory which emphasizes human capital as a source of competitive advantage. However, challenges such as insecurity, infrastructural deficits, and high turnover rates continue to constrain HRM effectiveness in Maiduguri. The study concludes that strategic HRM practices are critical for sustaining performance in conflict-prone environments. It recommends that UBA and similar institutions strengthen employee development programs, adopt context-specific HR strategies, and integrate performance-driven reward systems to mitigate operational challenges. The study contributes to the discourse on strategic HRM by providing empirical insights from a crisis-affected region, thereby offering practical implications for organizational leaders, policymakers, and researchers.
