Abstract
ABSTRACT
Nigeria faces significant sanitation challenges, particularly in rural, peri-urban communities.Lack of access to safe, sustainable, and affordable sanitation solutions contributes to environmental degradation, public health crises, and compromised human wellbeing. This project explores sustainable sanitation strategies tailored to Nigeria's socio-economic and environmental context. This study utilized a sample of 150 participants both students and staff of COSIT. The use of this sample size was justifiable because the study was conducted among group of respondents, students and staff.Descriptive and Chi-square test statistics were used and the sample was selected through sampling technique, where 20 questionnaires were given to both teaching and non-teaching staff and 130 questionnaires were given to students inCOSIT. The finding revealed that, sanitation is a cornerstone of environmental health, playing a crucial role in preventing the spread of diseases and protecting natural resources. Effective sanitation practices not only improve student health but also contribute to sustainable development and university well-being. Incorporating sustainable practice in school curriculums are considered as an essential component for a holistic education and can be embedded in different learning areas, by increasing awareness and knowledge about sanitation. The study concluded that sustainability is a challenge for both environmental health and human wellbeing in COSIT. In addition, most students do not benefit from institution and community support provided due to limited access and low levels of affordability. The study also recommended that campaign to raise student and staff awareness about environmental sanitation is essential in achieving success in environmental issues. Communal cleaning days should be re-introduced and observed in the school environment.
