STATISTICAL MODELLING OF CO-INFECTION OF HIV/AIDS AND SEXUALLY TRANSMITED DISEASES IN NIGERRIA (A CASE STUDY OF ENUGU STATE TEACHING HOSPITAL)
Abstract
This study statistically modeled the co-infection of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among patients attending Enugu State Teaching Hospital, Nigeria. The research aimed to determine the prevalence, identify significant predictors, and evaluate the predictive performance of a logistic regression model for HIV and Gonorrhea co-infection. A total of 682 patient records from the hospital’s infectious disease clinic between 2020 and 2024 were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and binary logistic regression. The findings revealed that 18.76% of patients were infected with HIV only, 20.38% with Gonorrhea only, and 15.39% were co-infected, while 45.47% had no infection. The Chi-square analysis showed significant associations between co-infection and factors such as age, gender, marital status, number of sexual partners, and transactional sex (p < 0.05). The logistic regression model identified age group, gender, education level, blood transfusion, and number of sexual partners as significant predictors of co-infection. The model demonstrated good fit (Hosmer-Lemeshow p = 0.488) and satisfactory predictive accuracy of 77.2%. The study concludes that HIV and STD co-infection remains a significant public health concern influenced by demographic and behavioral factors. It recommends integrated screening programs, targeted health education, and strengthened prevention strategies to reduce the burden of co-infection in the Nigerian healthcare setting.
