Abstract

Abstract Highway construction, while essential for economic development and connectivity, often leads to significant environmental challenges, particularly soil erosion. Erosion during road works not only degrades the landscape but also contributes to sedimentation in waterways, structural instability, and increased maintenance costs. This study examines the causes, control measures, and challenges associated with erosion on highway construction sites. It identifies key factors such as vegetation removal, improper drainage, and poor slopе management as primary contributors to erosion. The research also evaluates various erosion control practices, including Best Management Practices (BMPs) like mulching, silt fences, and revegetation. Despite the availability of these techniques, implementation is frequently hindered by financial constraints, technical limitations, and regulatory inefficiencies. Through a comprehensive review of literature and relevant case studies, the work underscores the importance of integrated planning, site-specific solutions, and capacity building to achieve sustainable erosion control. The findings serve as a guide for engineers, contractors, and policymakers in adopting effective strategies to mitigate environmental degradation during highway development projects. The study concludes that a combined approach to erosion control, supported by strong policy enforcement and continuous training, is essential for sustainable highway construction.
