ASSESSMENT OF THE USE OF COMPUTER IN TEACHING AND LEARNING OF CHEMISTRY IN SOME SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN KANO MUNICIPAL LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KANO STATE
Abstract
This study assesses the use of computers in the teaching and learning of chemistry, focusing on the problems, prospects, and solutions in selected secondary schools within Kano Municipal Local Government Area of Kano State. A descriptive survey design was adopted, involving 120 respondents comprising 60 teachers and 60 students from 10 secondary schools. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, with results presented in percentages. Findings reveal that 75% of the respondents acknowledged the importance of computers in enhancing the teaching and learning of chemistry through visualization of complex chemical concepts, simulations, and access to diverse educational resources. However, 68% identified limited access to computers and related resources as a significant challenge, while 55% reported a lack of computer literacy among teachers and students. Additionally, 47% of the respondents highlighted frequent power outages as a hindrance to effective computer usage. Despite these challenges, 80% of respondents expressed optimism about the prospects of integrating computers into chemistry education, citing improved learning outcomes and engagement as key benefits. To address the challenges, 65% of respondents recommended increased government funding to provide computers and training for teachers, while 60% suggested alternative power solutions such as solar panels. The study concludes that the integration of computers into chemistry teaching holds great potential, provided that the identified challenges are adequately addressed through stakeholder collaboration.
