CO-OPERATIVE PARTICIPATION AS A STRATEGY FOR HOUSEHOLD POVERTY ALLEVIATION IN ABEOKUTA SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, OGUN STATE

ABSTRACT The study investigated cooperative participation as a strategy for household poverty alleviation in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, Ogun State. It adopted a survey research design. The sample, which comprise ninety (90) respondents, include business-owners, civil servants, students, services, sales-workers and artesian. Descriptive survey design was used as the research design and sample of the study consisted of all multipurpose cooperatives in Ogun State. Using a random sampling technique, data were gathered from the respondents through the use of a research questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, FGT model and Probit model. Findings revealed that cooperative models, ranging from consumer and producer cooperatives to credit and housing cooperatives, have the potential to empower households economically and socially. Again, about 11.1% of respondent have no education, 8.9% of respondent are primary school educates, 24.4% are secondary school educate, while 55.6% are Bsc holders. About 22.2% of respondent are business owners, 21.1% of respondent are civil servant, 8.9% are student, 10% are sales worker, 10% are service renders, while 27.8% are artisan. The average monthly income was #61,666 which is lower than Nigeria minimum wage of #77,000 per workers. Similarly, non of the identify variable have significant effect on the level of participation of members in cooperative activities. The study recommends the need to implement educational programmes to raise awareness about the benefits of cooperative participation.
