Abstract

ABSTRACT The analysis for the physicochemical characteristic of three tributaries of Udo Nwankwo River Atan Ikot Okoro, Nto nsek and Ekepyong Atai in Ikot Ekpene was carried out using standard analytical method. The result of the analysis revealed that the three contained all the analyzed parameters, and their results were as follows; ST1W (Atan Ikot Okoro): temperature 25.70+0.00, pH 5.93+0.002, Salinity % 0.00+0.00, Conductivity 28.00+0.003 µscm-1, Acidity mg/l 52.00+0.005, Alkalinity mg/l 48.00+0.002, DO mg/l 10.35+0.03, BOD mg/l 7.35+0.001, COD mg/l 45.18+0.03, TH mg/l 46.30+0.30, TDS mg/l 14.04+0.01, TSS mg/l 28.10+0.03, ST2W (Nto nsek): temperature 25.60+0.00, pH 6.10+0.003, Salinity % 0.00+0.00, Conductivity µscm-1 17.15+0.01, Acidity mg/l 52.00+0.03, Alkalinity mg/l 56.00+0.02, DO mg/l 12.48+0.003, BOD mg/l 6.95+0.002, COD mg/l 37.40+0.02, TH mg/l 44.40+0.02, TDS mg/l 8.36+0.001, TSS mg/l 29.40+0.03 and ST3W (Ekepyong Atai): temperature 25.70+0.01, pH 6.45+0.01, Salanity % 0.00+0.00, Conductivity µscm-1 19.93+0.02, Acidity mg/l 40.00+0.03, Alkalinity mg/l 32.00+0.03, DO mg/l 11.60+0.02, BOD mg/l 7.40+0.01, COD mg/l 40.10+0.03, TH mg/l 44.15+0.03, TDS mg/l 9.94+0.02, TSS mg/l 28.60+0.01. Water quality in the three tributaries of Udo Anwankwo River contained all the analyzed parameters except salinity that was not detected. Tributaries should be regularly checked. The pH of 5.93 in Atan Ikot Okoro tributaries, 6.10 in Nto nsek and 6.45 in Ekepyong Atai indicated that the tributaries water is less acidic. The BOD of 7.35, 6.95 and 7.40 mg/l in the three tributaries indicate moderate pollution of the three tributaries. Total hardness ranges between 44.15 to 46.06 mg/l in the tributaries indicates soft water. Generally, mean value of the physicochemical parameters were within the recommended limit of WHO (2013) NSDWQ (2015) for human consumption and aquatic life to thrive
