THE GEOLOGY OF OBAN AND IT'S ENVIRONS AND AEROMAGNETIC INTERPRETATION OF THE CALABAR FLANK: IMPLICATION FOR PETROLEUM PROSPECTIVITY
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The surveyed Oban is situated within the Oban massif in southeastern Nigeria .Extensive field investigations were carried out to explore and comprehend the area's geology. These investigations were supplemented by laboratory analysis , particularly thin sections, which unveiled the presence of both igneous and metamorphic rocks in the area . The majority of the rocks in the area are metamorphic, accounting for approximately 75% of rocks, while the remaining 25% are igneous rocks. Notable igneous rocks observed include pegmatite and dolerite intrusions. The metamorphic rocks include granite gneiss, granite orthogneiss, granite pegmatite, granitic gneiss and biotite schist. The predominant mineral composition migmitite gneiss in the area encompasses quartz muscovite, biotite, plagioclase, feldspar, mica and various opaque minerals. The area was affected by the Pan- African orogeny, resulting in the prevailing NE-SW orientation of the foliation planes. The area holds significant economic importance which quartz; use in metallurgical industries, gneiss; which can be use in construction and engineering purpose, including its lush vegetation and groundwater reserves.
