MULTIDRUG RESISTANCE OF KLEBSILLA SPECIES ISOLATED FROM STREET VENDED RAW CHICKEN WITHIN MAJOR MARKET IN AKWA IBOM STATE.
Abstract
The multidrug resistance of Klebiella species isolated from street vended raw chicken within major market in Akwa Ibom State was carried out using standard microbiological method. The result of the total bacterial count revealed that sample B had the highest bacterial count of 5.0x104 – 4.0x104cfu/g, followed by sample D (4.6x104 – 4.9x104cfu/g) while sample C had the least bacteria count (3.8x104 – 2.9x104cfu/g). the bacteria identify were Klebsiella pneumeniae (38.5%) Klebsiella oxytoca (43.6%) and Klebsiella planticola (17.9%). The antibiotic susceptibility test showed that Klebsiella pneumeniae, Klebsiella oxytoca and Klebsiella planticola were sensitive to Tarivid, Ampicilin, Streptomycin, Septrin, Ciprofloxacin, Augmentin, Gentamycin and peflaxin but resistance to Nalidixic acid and Ciporex. There was no reflection of multidrug resistance amoung the isolates. The relatively high bacterial load of isolates from fresh sample could be due to the poor handling of the meat, contamination from the environment during slaughtering, washing, dressing of the meat transportation and storage. The contaminated chicken cloud be a vehicle for transportation of pathogens among the people which cloud be a great public health risk to the consumers.
