ANALYSIS OF HEAVY METALS IN TWO DIFFERENT BABY FOODS
Abstract
A number of two different samples of baby foods were analysed using an Atomic Absorption Spectromer for the presence of Cr, Cd, Pb, and Ni. All the results were compared with the data from their label and proposed guideline published by WHO in 2013. Pb. Cr.Cd. and Ni were detected. The two samples. N and F contain the highest amount of Nit 14.8. 29.3mg/kg) respectively, which is a traced element and it is within. the provisional maximum tolerable daily intake of 50 to 500mg/kg set by WHO. Cr was also detected in the two samples, N and F (22.7.18.7mg/kg) respectively, and it below the provisional tolerable monthly intake of 25mg/kg set by WHO. Cd was detected in both samples N and F( 8.6. 13.6mg/kg) respectively and it is below the provisional tolerable monthly intake of 25mg/kg set by WHO. The result of this study shows that baby food products samples sourced from the pharmacy are adequate in essential elements of nickel, and toxic heavy elements of Cd and Cr are within safety limits permissible by WHO. Pb which is very toxic was also detected in a very minute quantity.
