Abstract

This study examines the laws that aim to combat gender discrimination in Nigeria. It establishes that these laws and institutions are inadequate to deal with gender discrimination, which has become a menace. The study traced the historical foundation of gender discrimination in Nigeria, while clarifying some key concepts which are relevant to the study. The research methodology adopted is the doctrinal research methodology, by analysing both primary and secondary sources, ranging from the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to legislations and policy documents, as well as critical works of learned authors. The research found that the challenges confronting the enforcement of anti-discrimination laws in Nigeria includes weak enforcement mechanisms, conflicts between customary, statutory, and religious laws, limited scope of legal provisions, amongst others. The study proffers solutions for addressing the challenges, which includes legislative review and public awareness.
