Abstract

This project examines the design, implementation, and impact of large-scale mural painting within the Painting Studio at The Polytechnic Ibadan’s Department of Art and Design. It explores the role of mural painting as powerful visual tools for expressing cultural heritage, educational themes, and social values, aligning with the institution’s commitment to art education and community engagement. By incorporating gloss and satin paints, this mural painting aimed to enhance durability and aesthetic appeal, accommodating environmental factors and the need for longevity in an outdoor setting. The project followed a structured methodology, encompassing theme selection, design conceptualization, and practical execution. Research findings emphasize mural painting potential as both artistic and educational mediums, enabling cultural narratives to be shared in accessible, engaging formats. The study also identified challenges related to material selection and environmental durability, providing insights for future projects. Recommendations include employing materials and expanding mural painting projects within educational and cultural institutions. Ultimately, the project demonstrates the transformative power of murals to beautify, educate, and preserve heritage, enriching public spaces and fostering a deeper connection to cultural identity.
