APPLICATION OF GIS TO LAND MANAGEMENT IN KADUNA METROPOLIS
Abstract
Land management in rapidly growing urban areas requires accurate, efficient, and up-to-date spatial information for effective planning and decision-making. This study examines the application of Geographic Information System (GIS) to land management in Kaduna Metropolis. The research highlights how GIS is used in land use planning, land administration, mapping, and monitoring of urban development. Spatial data were collected from satellite imagery, cadastral maps, and relevant government agencies, and analyzed using GIS techniques such as spatial analysis, mapping, and database management. Findings reveal that GIS enhances efficiency in land record management, improves accuracy in land use planning, reduces land-related conflicts, and supports sustainable urban development. Despite challenges such as inadequate technical expertise, high cost of data acquisition, and limited institutional capacity, the study concludes that GIS remains a vital tool for effective land management in Kaduna Metropolis. The study recommends increased investment in GIS infrastructure, capacity building, and policy support to maximize its benefits for urban land administration.
