BIOACTIVITY STUDIES OF COMPOUNDS FROM THE LEAF EXTRACTS OF CLEOME GYNANDRA
Abstract
The target of this study is to determine the antioxidant activities of compound(s) from the leaf extracts of Cleome gynandra, to examine their phytochemical constituents and to test antimicrobial sensitivity. The powdered leaf sample of the plant was percolated with ethanol for one week. It was decanted, filtered and concentrated using rotavapour (R110) at 40 oC to obtain the ethanol crude extract (F01). The crude ethanol extract was macerated using solvents of different polarities to obtain petroleum ether extract (F02), chloroform extract (F03), ethyl acetate extract (F04), acetone extract (F05), aqueous extract (F06) and the residue (F07). Results of phytochemical screening showed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, saponins, flavonoids, tannins, triterpenes and phenolic compounds distributed across the fractions. Antimicrobial sensitivity test was carried out against bacterial and fungal isolates using disc diffusion method. The acetone fraction was found to have the highest activity whereas the petroleum ether fraction was found to have the lowest activity.
