Abstract

This study investigates the sociolinguistic features of campus-based Pidgin English interactions among students of Kwara State University (KWASU). The research explores how Nigerian Pidgin English (NPE) functions as a lingua franca, fostering communication across diverse linguistic and ethnic backgrounds while also serving as a tool for identity construction, social bonding, and cultural expression. Adopting a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and questionnaires administered to a cross-section of students. The analysis focused on four key features: lexical borrowing and innovation, codeswitching and code-mixing, pragmatic and sociocultural functions, and the role of Pidgin in promoting solidarity and group identity. Findings reveal that Pidgin English is a vibrant, dynamic, and adaptive language variety within the university setting, heavily influenced by youth creativity, social realities, and digital culture. Despite its informal status, NPE plays a significant role in fostering inclusivity, reducing linguistic barriers, and reinforcing campus social networks. However, challenges remain in terms of societal perception and formal acceptance. The study concludes that while Nigerian Pidgin English is often stigmatized, its sociolinguistic importance in contemporary student life cannot be overlooked. Recommendations are made for further academic exploration and for considering NPE’s potential in educational, media, and social development contexts.
