ASSESMENT OF THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE COMMUNICATION SKILL OF UNDERGRADUATE A STUDY OF DELTA STATE POLYTECHNIC OGWASHI-UKU
Abstract
This study assessed the impact of social media on the communication skills of undergraduate students of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku. With the increasing use of social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter among students, concerns have arisen regarding their influence on students’ oral and written communication abilities. The study adopted a survey research design, and data were collected using structured questionnaires administered to selected undergraduate students of the institution. The findings revealed that while social media enhances students’ interaction, confidence, and exposure to information, excessive use negatively affects formal writing skills, grammar, and face-to-face communication. The study concludes that social media has both positive and negative impacts on students’ communication skills and recommends proper regulation and educational guidance on its usage.
