Abstract

ABSTRACT This thesis presents a contrastive morphosyntactic study of the noun phrase in French and English. The primary objective is to analyze structural similarities and differences to facilitate French language acquisition among English-speaking learners, particularly in Nigeria. Through a detailed analysis of autonomous units (nouns, adjectives) and non-autonomous units (determiners, prepositions), this research highlights the complexity of gender and number agreement in French compared to the morphological simplification of English. The findings emphasize that understanding inflectional and derivational processes is crucial for mastering meaning construction in both languages. Keywords: Morphosyntax, Contrastive study, Noun phrase, French, English, Agreement.
