DETERMINATION OF SOME HEAVY METALS ACCUMULATIONON THE INFLORESCENCE OF COCOYAM (COLOCASIA ESCULENTA) OBTAINED FROM IBENO AND IBIONO IBOM L.G.A., AKWA IBOM STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The levels of some heavy metal in cocoyam inflorescence was determined using standard analytical procedures. The results revealed that lead had the highest concentration in both sample (1.43±0.00, 1.31±0.20 mg/100g), followed by cadmium (1.30±0.11, 0.34±0.11 mg/100g), arsenic (1.00±0.00, 0.63±0.11 mg/100g), and mercury (0.94±0.11, 0.75±0.00 mg/100g) while chromium had the least concentration (0.64±0.00, 0.43±0.22 mg/100g). This indicated that lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium are poisonous metals affecting blood. They are toxic to both central and peripheral nervous system and they exceeds the recommended safety limits of WHO while chromium from both samples of cocoyam inflorescence is within the recommended safety limit from WHO.
