MULTINATIONAL COMPANIES IMPACT ON DEVELOPING COUNTRIES, EVIDENCE FROM NIGERIA

Abstract

The study examined multinational companies impact on developing countries, evidence from Nigeria. Four research questions and four hypotheses guided that study. A descriptive design of survey type was used. Researcher-developed instrument; tagged: ‘Multinational Companies and Developing Country Questionnaire (MCDCQ)’ with 0.88 as reliability coefficient was used for data collection. Frequency count, percentage and bar-chart were used for presenting demographic characteristics of the respondents. Research questions were answered using descriptive statistics of mean. Hypotheses were tested using PPMC. The findings of the study revealed that multinational companies create more employment opportunities, employment from multinational companies are more lucrative, multinational companies have different branches that made them need more employees, multinational companies invest heavy on investment opportunity that enhance their ability to employed more people and multinational companies have different products and services in the market which made them need more workforce were among the contributory impact of multinational companies towards employment creation in Nigeria. Activities of multinational companies reduced poverty, employment opportunities given by multinational companies gave them channels towards poverty reduction, multinational companies sometime sponsored poverty reduction programme, multinational companies provided social amenities that tend to reduce poverty and multinational companies endanger community development were among roles multinational companies are playing towards poverty reduction in Nigeria. Multinational companies provided empowerment programme for citizens to increase their economic ability, multinational companies sponsored Nigerians for international programme, multinational companies engaged youths in human capital development, multinational companies sometimes give economic empowerment for youths and multinational companies build empowerment centre across community they operate were among multinational companies empower Nigerians. Were among the role of multinational companies towards improving government revenue in Nigeria. It was also indicated that multinational companies positively related to employment creation, poverty reduction, empowerment and government revenue in Nigeria. Nigerian government should encourage more multinational companies into Nigeria because of their benefits on the economy. Government should do everything possible to reduces rate at which multinational companies are leaving Nigeria economy.
