THE EFFECTS OF COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT ON INDEPENDENT NIGERIAN MUSICIANS IN THE DIGITAL AGE
Abstract
This research project explores the impact of copyright infringement on the Nigerian music industry, focusing on the experiences of musicians and the legal and economic implications of this issue. Data was collated through the analysis of relevant laws and regulations. Hence, the findings suggest that copyright infringement has a significant negative impact on the livelihood of independent musicians, and that current laws are not adequately addressing the problem. This research also investigates the impact of copyright infringement on the creative output of Nigerian musicians. It explores the impact on motivation, inspiration, and the ability to make a living from music. It also examines the role of technology in enabling and facilitating copyright infringement, and the response of the Nigerian government and its legal system. The study finds that copyright infringement has a significant negative impact on the creativity and economic viability of the Nigerian music industry. It also focuses on the independent music scene. It examines the factors that contribute to copyright infringement, including the lack of legal protection, the impact of technology, and the prevalence of piracy. The study also looks at the economic and creative consequences of copyright infringement, and how it affects these musicians. It makes recommendations for addressing the problem, including legislative reforms and the promotion of alternative business models. This research also examines the underlying factors that contribute to copyright infringement, including the ease of access to technology promoting copyright infringement on a wide scale and the lack of economic incentives for musicians. The study also looks at how these factors affect the creative process and the ability of musicians to earn a living from their work. It also considers the potential solutions. Hence, this research is relevant to those working in the music industry, policymakers, and anyone interested in the creative process and the impact of technology on creativity. Conclusively, this research paper recognizes the impact of copyright infringement on independent Nigerian musicians as significant and should not be ignored. While the factors that contribute to copyright infringement are complex, the purpose of this research however makes it clear that steps must be taken to address the issue, both through legislative changes and other vital means. For without these measures, the creativity and livelihood of independent musicians in Nigeria will continue to be at risk.
