EXAMINING THE OPINIONS OF PARENTS AND TEACHERS ON THE USE OF CORPORAL PUNISHMENT IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ONDO WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA.
Abstract
The study investigates the perspectives of parents and educators regarding the implementation of corporal punishment in secondary schools within the Ondo West local government area. The objectives of the research include examining the attitudes and beliefs held by parents and teachers towards corporal punishment, assessing the prevalence of its application in secondary schools, and identifying the factors that contribute to its usage. Additionally,the research aims to evaluate the effects of corporal punishment on students' academic performance, encompassingaspects such as motivation, attendance, and overall engagement in the educational process.Furthermore, the study seeks to identify more effective alternatives to corporal punishment thatcan foster positive behavioral changes and enhance student outcomes. Data collection wasconducted with precision, employing systematic coding and thorough cleaning processes toensure the integrity of the data. Qualitative data were organized thematically, while quantitativedata were analyzed using descriptive statistics through SPSS. The findings culminate in severalrecommendations, including the need for the Ministry of Education to enhance awareness amongteachers and principals regarding the prohibition of corporal punishment through seminars andtraining workshops. It is also suggested that teacher union representatives disseminate policydetails to educators by distributing printed copies and participating in awareness campaigns.Moreover, the Ministry of Education should consider recruiting professionaI counselors for eachbasic school to provide specialized support to students, as teachers may lack the necessaryexpertise.Training workshops for teachers and supervisors are recommended to equip them withthe skills required to effectively manage student behavior using alternative disciplinary methods.Lastly, collaboration between the Ministry of Education, local government authorities, and non-governmental organizations, as well as business entities, is essential to construct adequateclassroom facilities and ensure a sufficient number of qualified teachers are available.
