LIBRARIAN’S KNOWLEDGE, AWARENESS AND PERCEPTION OF FOURTH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION TECHNOLOGIES IN SELECTED ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN OGUN STATE

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is reshaping societies, economies, and industries across the globe through the integration of digital technologies, artificial intelligence, automation, and data-driven processes. This study therefore, investigated librarian’s knowledge, awareness and perception of fourth industrial revolution technologies in selected academic libraries in Ogun State.
Description survey was adopted while total enumeration random sampling technique was used to capture sixty-seven (67) librarians in selected academic libraries in South-West Nigeria. A questionnaire designed by the researchers was used for collection data and 83 copies of the questionnaire were administered while 64(95.5%) copies of questionnaire copies were returned duly completed and found usable for the analysis. Data was analyzed by simple percentages and frequency counts, mean and standard deviation was used to analysed the research questions.
Results showed that the fourth industrial revolution technologies used by librarians in selected academic libraries Ogun State are RFID technology 64(100%), 3D printing technology 64(100%) and internet of things 60(93.8%). Librarians’ are aware of RFID technology (x ̅= 2.58), augmented reality (x ̅= 2.56) and internet of things (x ̅= 2.56) in selected academic libraries Ogun State. The librarian’s knowledge of fourth industrial revolution technologies in selected academic libraries in Ogun State was moderate (x ̅= 2.50). The librarian’s perception of fourth industrial revolution technologies in selected academic libraries in Ogun State was positive(x ̅= 3.05). Librarians are either very sure or somehow confident that their libraries have the necessary equipment for effective performance in the Fourth Industrial Revolution Era. The challenges facing librarians while using fourth industrial revolution technologies in selected academic libraries in Ogun State are financial constraints 58(90.6%), connectivity issues 54(84.4%) and privacy issues 45(70.3%).
It is recommended that librarians should undergo regular training programs to enhance their knowledge and skills related to Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies. This will empower them to effectively use and integrate technologies such as RFID, 3D printing, and the Internet of Things into library services.
