Abstract

This study investigates the critical need for effective acoustics provision in classrooms at the Federal Polytechnic Bida. In educational environments, poor acoustics can significantly affect communication between lecturers and students, leading to reduced learning outcomes. This research aims to assess the current acoustic conditions within the classrooms and to give recommendations to improve the current acoustic conditions in the classrooms, Experimental method of research was applied in the process of this research focusing on parameters such as reverberation time, sound levels, and noise distractions. Field measurements were conducted using software applications such as Soniflex for measuring reverberation time and Sound Analyzer for measuring sound level in 16 classrooms across two areas—Abuja and Lagos—sound levels were measured at different times of the day (9 AM, 12 PM, and 3 PM), and reverberation time for each class room was measured by measuring the size of each class room (length, breath and height) and the measurement was taken at five positions in the class rooms (front, back, left, right and center). The results indicate that most classrooms exceed recommended reverberation time limits, leading to speech intelligibility issues and auditory discomfort. Additionally, variations in sound levels during peak and off-peak lecture periods further exacerbate acoustic challenges. The lack of sound-absorbing materials and poor architectural design were identified as key contributors to the problem. To address these challenges, modern acoustic solutions, including sound-absorbing panels, smart windows with acoustic insulation, and digital sound control systems, were proposed. These solutions align with global trends in sustainable and intelligent classroom designs. The implementation of proper acoustic provisions will not only improve communication and comprehension but also enhance overall learning experiences. This study advocates for immediate attention to acoustic needs in educational institutions, emphasizing their impact on academic performance and student well-being.
