AWARENESS AND UTILIZATICN OF YOUTUBE VIDEOS AMONG PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT, ADEYEMI FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION, ONDO STATE
Abstract
This study investigated the level of awareness and utilization of YouTube videos among pre-service Teachers. The main objective of this research is to ascertain the awareness level and attitude of pre-service teachers on the utilization of YouTube videos for learning; Its perceived effect on learning and the challenges encountered thereof. Five research questions and two hypothesis guided this study. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire which was developed by the researcher and validated by the research project supervisor and another educationist in the field of educational technology. The study adopted a survey research design in which the population of the study was all undergraduate in the Department of English, Adeyemi Federal University of Education. The total sample for thestudy was 200 pre-service teachers. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistical tools (frequency count, mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistical tool (T-test). From the analyzed data, it was discovered that the level of awareness and utilization of YouTube videos for learning among pre-service teachers is high; the attitude of pre-service teachers to the usage of YouTube videos is positive; there is no significant difference between the attitude of male and female pre-service teachers towards the usage ofYouTube videos for learning. This study also revealed the effect of YouTube videos for learning which include; positive motivation for learning and improve academic performance.Likewise, the study speculated the challenges encountered by the pre-service teachers in the usage of YouTube videos for learning which includes: Network issues, misinformation among others. However, it was recommended among others that educational institutions should provide training and guidance to pre-service teachers on how to effectively utilize YouTube videos for learning purposes in order to improve the level at which educational potential of YouTube videos can be maximize.
