AN APPRAISAL OF POVERTY ALLEVIATION PROGRAM TOWARD YOUTH DEVELOPMENT (A CASE STUDY OF SOBA LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCIL OF KADUNA STATE)

Poverty remains a major developmental challenge in Nigeria, particularly among the youth population, despite the implementation of various poverty alleviation programmes by different levels of government. This study appraises the effectiveness of poverty alleviation programmes on youth development in Soba Local Government Council of Kaduna State. The study examines the extent to which these programmes have contributed to improving youths’ socio-economic conditions, employment opportunities, skill acquisition, and overall standard of living. A descriptive research design was adopted, and data were collected through both primary and secondary sources. Primary data were obtained using structured questionnaires administered to selected youths in the study area, while secondary data were sourced from government reports, journals, and relevant literature. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentage and descriptive statistical tools. Findings from the study reveal that although several poverty alleviation programmes have been introduced in Soba Local Government Area, their impact on youth development has been moderate due to challenges such as inadequate funding, poor implementation, political interference, and limited access by intended beneficiaries. The study concludes that effective implementation and proper monitoring of poverty alleviation programmes are essential for meaningful youth development. It therefore recommends improved transparency, increased youth participation, adequate funding, and continuous evaluation of such programmes to enhance their effectiveness and sustainability.
