CREATIVE ACCOUNTING AND LIKELIHOOD OF CORPORATE FAILURES
Emmanuel Akpomanemi Efemini · BSc · Accounting

The purpose of this study is to examine creative accounting and the likelihood of corporate failures in Nigeria. Specifically, the study examined the effect of discretionary accrual management, real actual earnings management, income smoothing, tax avoidance, and the likelihood of corporate failure among listed companies in Nigeria. A multiple regression estimation approach was employed on information extracted from a sample of forty (40) companies listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) between 2015 and 2022. Panel Least Squares (PLS) regression was employed to estimate the data and test the formulated hypotheses. The findings revealed a negative and insignificant relationship between discretionary accrual management, real actual earnings management, income smoothing, tax avoidance, and the likelihood of corporate failure among listed companies in Nigeria. In line with these findings, the study recommends that the management of listed companies should not succumb to pressure from investors and financial analysts to show positive earnings or an increase in earnings, despite the fact that the study found a negative and insignificant relationship between discretionary accrual management and the likelihood of corporate failure.

IMPACT OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN IN ONITSHA EDUCATIONZONE OF ANAMBRA STATE".
Onyinye Favour Okoli · BEd · Primary Education

This study was designed to investigate the "Impact of Child Abuse And Neglect on the Academic Performance of Primary School Children in Onitsha Educational Zone of Anambra State. Four research questions were formulated to guide the study. The target population was 590 teachers in the 59 public primary schools in Onitsha North Local Government Area, Anambra State. A random sampling technique was used to select 25 primary schools from 59 schools in the area from which 8 teachers were also selected. This was to ensure that equal opportunities were given to all the population to participate in the study. In al1,200 primary school teachers participated in the study. This study was a descriptive research design. A structured questionnaire which had the reliability of 0.85 after the pilot study was used as instrument for collection of data. Data collected were analysed using mean and standard deviation. The findings showed that abused and neglected children tend to perform lower than their peers, show the poorest academic performance because they have no time to read, undergo a wide range of personality disorders such as increased anxiety which negatively affects their academic performance. There is a relationship between parental occupation and child abuse/neglect among children because, self employed parents who decided to spend quality time with their children to avoid abuse may lack the resources to provide the children's basic needs leading to child neglect. There is a relationship between parental education and child abuse/neglect among children because.parental level of education may reduce the risk of child abuse and child neglect by encouraging positive parenting practices. As possible strategies to averting child abuse and neglect among children, programmes should be started to address poverty which was one of the causes of child labour. Recommendations were made based on the findings that Government should employ more counsellors to help and guide parent on how to treat their children/wards to avoid abuse and neglect.

EFFECTS OF HEURISTIC TEACHING APPROACH ON STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE AND RETENTION IN ECONOMICS IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN GUSAU, ZAMFARA STATE, NIGERIA
Aminat Abdulazeez · BEd · Education Economics

    ABSTRACT
This study, titled "Effects of Heuristic Teaching Approach on Students’ Performance and Retention in Economics in Senior Secondary Schools in Gusau, Zamfara State, Nigeria," investigated whether Heuristic approach could combat the persistent decline in students' Economics performance. The study was guided by two objectives with corresponding research questions and null hypotheses. Adopting a quasi-experimental design, a sample of 188 Senior Secondary School Two students were taught Economics using either Heuristic approach or Discussion Methodfor two weeks, with their performance and retention measured by an Economics Performance Test. The population of the study was made up of 4,353 male and 3,583 female, totalling 7,936 SS2 students from 28 senior secondary schools in Gusau. The instrument, an Economics Performance Test (EPT), was validated by three experts and was pilot-tested. A reliability index of 0.82 was calculated using the PPMC statistics tool. The findings demonstrated a statistically significant advantage for Heuristic approach in improving both students' academic performance (p = .039) and, notably, their retention of Economics concepts (p = .0000), leading to the rejection of the null hypotheses. The study concludes that Heuristic approach is a more effective pedagogical strategy for enhancing immediate understanding and long-term knowledge retention in Economics, recommending for its integration into teaching practices and curriculum development.t

DEVELOPING UNDERGRADUATE COMMUNICATIONS LABORATORY HANDS-ON EXPERIMENTS USING NI USRP AND LABVIEW
Olamide Emmanuel Adeosun · BSc · Electronic and Electrical Engineering

RFand communications principles are taught using a theoretical, math-focused approach where students derive formulas and build simulations. Many educators see the value of incorporating experimental component into the curriculum so that students can apply the theory with prototype implementations and experiment with live signals. However, the opportunity to do so is limited by a lack of affordable, accessible, and relevant tools. This paper will discuss the use of LabVIEW-based virtual instrumentation and the NI USRP to rapidly create real-time communication systems

NUMERICAL APPROXIMATIONS AND ERROR ANALYSIS FOR INTEGRATION TECHNIQUES
Olawale Paul Isogun · BSc · MATHEMATICS

This research investigates numerical integration techniques, focusing on the Trapezoidal

Rule, Simpson’s Rule, Gaussian Quadrature, Monte Carlo Integration, and Romberg Integration.

The study applies selected methods to approximate definite integrals, compares

the results with exact analytical values, and evaluates the accuracy through both theoretical

error bounds and actual error calculations. While Monte Carlo integration is discussed

in terms of its probabilistic foundation and error behavior, the other methods are implemented

in practical examples to demonstrate their effectiveness. The analysis highlights

the trade-offs between simplicity and accuracy: basic rules like the trapezoidal method

provide quick approximations, whereas advanced techniques such as Gaussian Quadrature

and Romberg Integration achieve higher precision. Overall, the study provides a

comparative understanding of numerical integration methods, balancing theoretical insights

with practical error analysis to guide the selection of appropriate techniques in

different problem contexts.
